Do You Know?
Many common household cleaning products do not list all their ingredients used. Do you know the possible toxic ingredients that are used in these heavily used home products?
1. NPEs
NPE, also known as nonylphenol ethoxylate, is toxic and widely used as a surfactant in common household products. Tests have shown that its ability as an endocrine disruptor mimics estrogen, affecting reproduction, causing birth defects and learning disabilities.
2. Phosphates
Commonly found in detergents, Phosphates are used to soften hard water, break down grease and remove stains. Asphosphates are nutrients for aquatic plants, when it ends up in the water system, they can cause accelerated algae growth. This depletes oxygen in the water, resulting in the death of fishes and organisms, creating unbalanced ecosystems.
3. Optical brighteners
Optical brighteners are chemical dyes that make fabrics appear brighter and whiter than they really are. Residuals left on clothes may cause skin irritation and allergic reactions. Also, as they are not easily biodegradable, they remain in the water system for an indefinite period of time. It is toxic to fish, animal and plant life.
4. Parabens
Parabens are a group of low cost chemical compounds widely used as preservatives in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals due to their anti-bacterial and fungicidal properties. Because they mimic estrogen, research has linked parabens to instances of breast cancer, although a conclusive link has yet to be established. Studies have shown that parabens can accumulate in body tissue over time, and have also caused fertility issues in research with mice.
